Default Where to make camp ??

It seems that the idea of making camp is, by far, the preferred option. So, after much deliberation I have come up with 2 options.

Colmar is close to the German/Swiss boarder and central to the Alsace region with loads of twisty, technical roads. We have stayed there before the food is very German influenced.

The other option is Besancon, which is further south but about the same distance and probably about about an hours less ride. Besancon will bring some of the lakes within a days riding, and if anybody fancies a a real long day, lunch in Torino is possible.

Based on:
  • Average speed of 30 Miles/h on national and country roads.
Average speed of 60 Miles/h on motorways.
But I reckon those speeds are a bit slow for bikes

Colmar:
  • Total distance: 381.7 miles (614.3 km )
Total estimated time: 7 hours and 51 min

Besancon:
  • Total distance: 376.9 miles (606.5 km )
Total estimated time: 7 hours and 7 min

Distances are from Calais

I voted for Colmar but Besancon sounds nicer. (oops, so please disregard)

The idea of lunch in Torino sounds great but think it's beyond the capabilities of my doubtless protesting posterior. ****!

I voted for Besancon as it is much quicker to get to. I agree that the average speeds in the calcs are a little low but the number of fuel stops required at 100+ speeds slows you down.

I think a day trip to Turin is pushing it a bit, since we need to cross the entire Alps - but we could always do a lightweight overnighter.
