This isn't quite right - the front wheel acts as a gyroscope, so by forcing it to rotate with the handlebars you are causing the wheel to roll (gyroscopic precession), tilting the bike. The centrifugal/centripetal forces just stop you from falling over when both tilted and cornering as the forces exactly match the forces from your CoG being off the centre-line.

I've always assumed that it's called counter-steering because you need to turn the handlebars the opposite direction to the way you would at a low speed - I challenge anyone to do a 180 turn in a road with counter-steering (at least with a sensibly heavy bike).

Indeed, but be assured the laws of physics work exactly the same for all of us....

Oh except my daughter has just told me centrifugal force doesn't exist.

Depending on her age, that may be concerning...

yeah - there are centrifugal force sceptics around. They obviously never heard of a centrifuge LOL its all in semantics really - for every force there is an equal and opposite force (Newton), so they say that the only real force is the one that is 'holding back' the rock you are swinging around your head on a piece of string (centripetal force or the tension in the string), the force trying to throw the rock a hundred yards if the string was not there does not exist, it is just an 'apparent force'

It all depends on your point of view - it may not exist in a theoretical sense, but it's still useful for describing the cumulative effects of other forces and inertia.
