Oh no!! Not what you need at any time, even less so in these temperatures. Hope it gets fixed quickly.

At least Direct Line has stepped up. Drain specialist turned up and rodded / powerflushed everything but didn't fully clear the issue. So CCTV-equipped team coming tomorrow.

In the meantime we're in a very nice AirBnb covered by insurance while the issue's diagnosed.

CCTV drain engineer has sorted the problem. Caused by wet wipes that have been put down the loo at some point, creating a partial blockage which has then built up over time.

We blame our kids / son's girlfriends, as we don't use wipes!

i use biodegradable flushable wipes. if you keep a packet in the toilet people are more likely to use them instead of their own.

its washing dishes in cold or tepid water that usually blocks drains.

good of direct line to step up though.

Many years ago we had a blocked drain but it affected my neighbour more than me. There's a manhole in my garden where water pipes from up and down or road meet in a collector, so first job was to check there. Prodding around with rods soon cleared the problem, lots of paint covered rags! I'd love to know which of our neighbours was the culprit.

The engineer mentioned that in theory, each house should have its own foul pipe to the main sewer (our house is detached, built in the early 70s). In our case, the house builders saved money by joining our foul pipe with our next-door neighbours', so they only have to run one pipe down to the main sewer. What's more, the manhole for the junction is on the neighbour's property.

The blockage was just on our side of the junction, but if the junction wasn't there it wouldn't have been a problem. Typical builders' penny-pinching. Luckily we get on with the neighbours ....

My house was built in 1957. The builders in their wisdom placed the manhole right on the property boundary! So I have to remove a 6x6 fence panel to get to it.

My understanding is that it is the water company's responsibility up to the point where the sewer splits off to individual properties. It is quite a common practice now for builders to share sewers between properties.
