Rust on the outside plates is pretty much irrelevant as long as it's not in the moving parts. You'd need an awful lot of rust to weaken the chain. But, generally a chain that's been allowed to get really rusty will be past its best in other ways.

I washed mine and cleaned it with paraffin on saturday, and forgot to relube it after. Left it standing overnight, came back and it was orange Quick clean and it's back to normal.

I use a 4? bottle of chainsaw chain oil. Very sticky, I just gob it on while spinning the back wheel on the rear stand. I ride every day in or out of the Dublin rain and cack, re-oil her every 2 weeks or so. No rust ever. Another thing that will preserve your chain's life, is if you ride through tons of grit and **** like I do, cleaning it every week or two will really improve the life. Even just with a toothy and WD-40.

BTW, in comparison to old, runny engine oil, chainsaw oil is practically like gelatin. I reckon engine oil would fling off in about one trip. As a side note, my bike is never clean, at least not in winter, so I don't sweat a bit of fling. On preventing corrosion, spray WD-40 on everthing except tyres, brake discs, bar grips, seat and paint work. Works wonders, washes right off when you want.

If the chainsaw oil works with the Scotty Ill get that as if its more viscous as it should mean less fling

Does the chainsaw oil work in the Scotty? The scotty oil is prone to fling
