Battery issue - Curvy
Help!! I needed to replace the battery on my SV the other week as it didn't seem to be holding a charge (and it had been on there for ages!) so brought a Motobatt. Thursday morning the bike wouldn't fire up and the battery went flat very quickly, started eventually. Charged it yesterday, came out this morning and once again no joy, not a happy bunny to say the least. Luckily I also charged a spare battery I had, I took the new battery out of the bike only to discover it had ballooned (see pictures) any ideas on what would cause this?
Any help much appreciated. |

Re: Battery issue - Curvy
The only battery I'd seen do that is the one on Kellyjo's Honda, when the reg rectifier had gone, so the battery was overcharging

Re: Battery issue - Curvy
Thats my thought. Too many volts to the battery. Get a multimeter and check whats actually reaching the battery before you throw a new battery in there, and get that fried as well.

Whatever you do dont put a third battery in it until you have got a proper diagnosis via a multimeter.A quick search on here for "charging system" will give you a good rundown on what to do and the numbers you should see.My guess is that your bike is hugely overcharging the battery, causing it to boil and blow up like that.

Re: Battery issue - Curvy
Firstly I am not criticising the OP, but I do find it strange when the stock response to a "charging issue" is to spend about £50 on a battery when £5 on a mulitmeter will give sufficient diagnostic capacity to identify the root cause of a problem.
I had a friend ask me to look at his van last week. "I have just spent £85 on a new battery, the last one was only a year old and it won't start". £24 on a new starter resolved his problem he is now trying to return the unnecessary battery

Re: Battery issue - Curvy
No excuse really, but in hind sight, yes I should have done some checks but at the time I thought it was an old battery so as I need the bike everyday I'd order a new one!!
It turns out to be a wrong move, will borrow a multimeter from work and take readings across the battery tonight. |

Battery issue - Curvy
Gross overcharging - the regulator umm - doesn't!

Re: Battery issue - Curvy
OK, did a quick test last night, put the multimeter across the battery and came out with the following -
Ignition off - 13.5v Bike running - 14v Revs @ 5K - 14.5v Am I missing something as everything seems to check out correctly, or do I need to check reading on the regulator? |

Re: Battery issue - Curvy
Sorry to be a pain, but do these numbers seem OK or is it the regulator?

Re: Battery issue - Curvy
I have some experience with the regulator as it went on mine, them number do look ok, but that could mean its a heat related issue (Once the R/R is up to high temps) or that there is a dodgy wire in the charging circuit somewhere.
Id suggest retesting while moving connections etc to see if the readings change. |
