More than lucky!
On the way home this evening going up the M4. I get on at junction 11, go past the services and off at junction 12. As I am going on to the slip road at junction 12 an unmarked car with lights flashing behind the grill follows me up the ramp. Oh dear.
I find a safe place to pull over and park up, take off helmet, put shameful face on and wait for the onslaught. "Do you know why I have pulled you over" says young police officer. "Yes" I say, "I was speeding". "Do you know how fast you were going?" "Not really sure about that officer, but I wasn't hanging around." "I clocked you at 115 miles an hour" and that was as you were slowing down for the exit" OH BUGGER So the conversation goes on. "Oh, I didn't realise that it was that fast mate". "I heard your exhaust quite some time before you came into view" DAMN THAT RENEGADE "That's what caught my attention. I was going to let you go, but then I saw you undertake a car". DAMN DAMN DAMN. Then those beautiful words came out. "Now I'm a biker myself, and regularly exceed the speed limit". Hey this is starting to sound a little better. "However the undertaking manoeuvre was somewhat dangerous and I thought I should pull you over and have a chat about it" "fair enough" I said He then started to explain why it's dangerous and what could happen if they pulled in whilst I was undertaking. I then explained to him that I do this with relative caution. I always wait briefly to ensure that they are not going to move over for me. I then indicate and pull left, using the whole of the middle lane to undertake and always ensure that I can, if needed, use the inside lane should said vehicle want to turn in on me. "Fair enough" he said. "But the next time it might not be me on patrol, so do yourself a favour AND DON'T DO IT. " "OK, I haven't got a problem with that" "That's it chat over, oh and your can sounds awesome on full throttle by the way." "Cheers m8." With that he jumps back in his car, puts his shades on and wheel spins off down the road. No checking the bike over, no docs check, rectification notice, not even a producer of a written warning. How lucky is that |

Nice! +1 respect to the police.
You probably are more likely to listen to the advice of someone like that than a jobsworth, agreed? |

Bit of a shock they'd pull you for undertaking (but can't argue when they're that lenient with speed, eh? )- I thought with IAM teaching it, it'd be accepted, if done safely as you described.

As I was driving down the road looking for somewhere safe to pull over I tried to think of some excuse and realized that no excuse was going to work, and I was convinced that I was going to lose my licence. I could have gave him a hug when I realized that I wasn't going to get booked.
Think I will take it a bit easy on the motorway for a few days. |
