Default Shell or Esso?

Was just reading an interesting article in this months Evo mag interview with Mike Copson Shells F1 technology manager, apparently the major brands have a distribution agreement which means that if you go to a shell station to fill up with petrol or diesel you could actually be filling up with another brand e.g. BP, Esso, etc.
All perfectly legal and above board as the trades act stipulates all they have to do is supply an item equivelent to EN228.
The only pump that must distribute exactly what you think you are getting is apparently shell optimax.

So next time you go to fill up at the supermarket and decide to go to shell instead "for the better quality stuff" have a little think

Yep. I did a project at school at we had to visit the shell distribution center by Heathrow.

They had all different trucks filling up there. Aparently they all do this, but the different companies add there own additives.

It is partly true, I use to collect racing fuel from Shell in Hamburg and there were other trucks from other refineries there, but as mentioned the companies put their own additives in,

I believe the likes of Tesco and Morrisons will scrimp on the price of these additives
