I get it, a proper popper pops properly preventing particle percolation whereas a poor popper pops prematurely promoting particle circulation.

Sorry

If you use a cheap filter you are wasting good oil

I have now taken delivery of the new union.

I thought it would have a hex shaped hollow for an allen key but it doesn't is just a hollow cylinder with threads.

Looking at the new part theres thread lock on the end screwing into the engine block.

Based on this i can't see an easy way to get the old one off and even if i get it off with grips I can't see how ill get the new one on tight enough. Any ideas?

Are the threads in the same direction? If so, you could thread a nut on the oil-filter side and use a spanner on that. If the threads are in the opposite directions, two nuts locked may be enough. (Not that I've ever need to change it myself).

Edit: that may be reversed!
