Saint-Gobain Pipelines, Stirling Lloyd and Bristol City Council - ‘Grip-Top’ an anti-skid covering for manhole covers Motorcycle, 2009 The creators of Grip-Top service covers have developed a combination of ductile iron manhole cover and surface treatment offering levels of grip comparable to road surroundings. It is the first product to comply with current CEN regulations and was specifically designed to meet the needs of motorcycle and scooter users who are extremely vulnerable to sudden changes in grip. Hmmmm. Fairly intuitive that you avoid polished iron when you've a contact patch the size of a rizla.
I think this may make people complacent. My luck, as soon as you had got used to the grippy ones, you would find the last remaining shiny one in the area
