Default Larger radiator

Mostly out of curiosity, has anyone fitted a larger rad off a different bike to the (curvy) SV?

are you over heating? - change the thermostat.

Track use only and the 650 was getting rather hot at cadwell earlier this month.

I've just slotted in a 700 and I'm thinking a bit of extra cooling may help.

Although what ever I do I'm going to fill in the sides in the GSXR fairing so that all the air goes through the rad, I suspect a lot of potential cooling is lost there.

Good point though, I've not removed the thermostat from it.

I put an SV1000 rad on my first 650 pointy and it held the same temp as a standard rad, didn't run any cooler.

An oil cooler more than anything, but to be honest i can't see a low power 700cc really needing it.

Aimed at the original question, why would you need/want a bigger radiator on the SV650??? The SV's radiator can cope with even heavily tuned engines, I'm running the OEM radiator on the 800cc.

Is that on the road or track?

I'd rather not change the rad if I don't have to but it's getting rather hot as is let alone with more heat to dump and I was worried that it could be a problem.

If I'm honest my rad isn't exactly the straightest so part of me is after something straight without a big fat dent.

(a momento of Cadwell 2006 and that the original R&G crash bungs are useless).

But knowing that the std rad can take quite a bit of tuning is a good sign, I wondered for a bit if the rather reduced frontal area was reducing the amount of air that can get to the rad but in a direct comparison.

a std GSXR1000 has even less of a gap.

The 800cc is a road bike, but it hasn't been on the road as an 800cc yet as its being rebuilt but it has spent 8 years as a 750cc on the road with no heat problems at all.

Get a straight radiator, if that doesn't help then there is something wrong with your motor!

The road is a world away from the track, I've had my bike from new, 26k of which was on the road with and zero problems. I've not run into problems as such on the ~18 trackdays I've done on it either but it does run hot, as in about 105 degrees. No noticable difference inbetween bent and straight rads either.

I also wouldn't worry about a larger motor on the road either but as it does run hot as a 650 more cooling will not hurt especially when upping it to 700 and losing the fan.

TL1000 rad sounds quite an idea, was it an 'S' or 'R' and fitted to a pointy or curvy?

i still say either replace the 'stat or run a cooler one?

....no good will come of completely removing it.

look at the oil rad too, is it blocked? oil does more for cooling engines these days than water.

Curvy so no oil rad. I don't feel like stripping the engine and modding it to take a pointy rad either, has anyone even tried it?

It'd be nice to fit an oil cooler but would have to be of the sandwich plate type and I don't know what will fit[1].

Removal of thermostat btw is std fare for race/track bikes. It's only of use when pootling round town when cold and restricts flow on a race/track bike.

[1] For example on VFR/RVF400 race bikes the CBR6 oil coolers fits.
