Re: SH2: The Rebuild (Image Heavy)
Part 7; When Two Become One:
The two halves of the crank case are now back together. Before we did that though the gear box was removed but not disassembled to get to the output shaft oil seals which required replacement. With the gear box back in place all of the internals were lubed up and instant gasket was applied to the case joins. Unfortunately no pics of this stage this time. So with the crankcases together properly we rotated the crank to check it had free movement before attaching the gear shift star and arm to check the gears could be selected. All appears free to rotate. Though it is worth noting that when testing the gear shift spinning the output or input shaft enabled us to select gear with ease. Now the simple task of reversal of the removal procedure. On went the oil pump, drive gears, cam chains and the alternator. Due to the design of the alternator it gave a little pop as it seated itself which was slightly unnerving at first. Clutch side. Alternator side. |

Re: SH2: The Rebuild (Image Heavy)
Part 8; Getting In Gear:
While I've got the engine in this state I thought I'd do a couple of mods to it. Firstly the gear shifting. I understand that there is a kit out there that replaces the shift star mechanism to provide more solid changing and reduce the chance of false neutrals. Sounds like a good idea, but at some $200 dollars or so I decided to opt for the cheaper option, a K5 shift star, arm and spring. For comparison the the K5 is at the top and the original is at the bottom. And installed. While I was there a set of EBC Heavy Duty Clutch plates went in. Followed by the Heavy Duty Springs. |

Part 9; Hayabusa? Don't Mind If I Do:
Well it wouldn't be natural not to do some more to the engine. So the Hayabusa Piston Mod was on the list. I had the barrels honed when the crank went in for the regrind and bearings. I dug around in the garage and found a couple of Hayabusa Pistons, got a set of SV piston rings and installed them. For comparison the Hayabusa Piston is on the left the SV on the right. The piston installed in the rear. And installed in the front. Tomorrows job valves and cams... |

Re: SH2: The Rebuild (Image Heavy)
nice, mine will look like that tomorrow when i start stripping it down
did you balance the crank to the pistons ? did you use any thing apart from the gasket between the cylinder and crank case ? like instant gasket Last edited by barwel1992; 08-01-11 at 10:21 PM. |

Re: SH2: The Rebuild (Image Heavy)
No doubt Dan will be attempting to help before hurting himself or skinning his knuckle or something equally stupid and then start bouncing around the garage swearing lots... Looking good Steve...does that mean I can have a go of SH2 when I come down??? |

Re: SH2: The Rebuild (Image Heavy)
How much do the K5 shifter components cost (star, spring, detent bearing)?

Re: SH2: The Rebuild (Image Heavy)
Yes my hindrance is present. Today he helped trap my finger between the cylinder and crankcases.
No. My understanding is that this is not required. Quote:
Yes. |
