Default Stupid fork spring question

Do you have to take everything off the front of the bike to change the springs or is there a way of doing it with the forks and wheel etc where they are?

do you have to ... No.

should you ... yes.

syphoning the oil is possible and I've do it a number of times, however to do it properly you should invert themand leave them to drain for a while.

Cheers Mark.

same as......

can you yes.

should you ... no.

oil is so cheap and you'll just be degrading the oil you put in if you don't remove the oil stuff, however if it's an 07 then I'd not worry tomuch but make sure you use the same weight and balance the air gap.

Cheers Mark.

Thanks for the tips m8, you just made my life easier as I have't the kit (stand or jack) to take the front end off and can't afford to get someone to do it. Many Thanks.

Remember though, you still need to support the front to change the springs- as soon as you undo the fork caps, that leg becomes unsupported. Even if you do it one at a time the front will drop. I suppose it's possible you could muscle the spring back down and refit the cap, but I'm pretty sure I couldn't. A rear stand and a car jack is enough, or you could even do it with blocks of wood, that sort of thing.

I propped mine up like this.

Rear Paddock stand, bricks under the engine, with a block of wood between the bricks and the engine, and then we held up the front with a rope suspended round the beam in my dads garage, was really stable and it really is easier if you are changing the oil to take the fork legs out of the bike, Like Rictus says that way you get all the old oil out, when you see the state of it, you'll want to drain it all if it was like mine was, it was thin and contaimated with water.
