Default SV650S 1999 top speed limited. Something wrong?

Hey chaps

I bought a 1999 SV650S not long ago as an extra bike, and last week took it to a track day. On the long straight, tucked in, I couldn't get the bike over 115mph.

The bike has 18,000 miles and no recent service history. The brakes needed an overhaul when I got it, but the air filter looked clean and I've not been near the plugs yet. I have no idea if or when valves were checked.

Does anyone think a top speed of 115mph is indicative of something that needs replacing?

It's not restricted is it? They'll top out around there.

It wasn't advertised or sold as restricted but I guess there's a possibility. I normally ride an S1000R so I just figured the SV was somewhat slower, but the top end on the track surprised me and got me thinking...

All the bumph from Suzuki says 130mph is the top speed of the curvy.

Might be bad valves/plugs/filter/oil... anything really

My 99 curvy s tops out around 115mph. But I am rather podgy .
Could be someones changed sprocket sizes for more low down poke.

I don't think it has low down poke either!

Mine could hit at least 120mph (indicated) in stock form but at a track, you're going to run out of straight, and it depends how fast you came out of the last bend, how late you brake (i.e. distance available*), headwind, gradient, other body parts sticking out, dirty air filter, knackered chain - all these can add up to more than a few mph each. Is it modified? Noisy can but no rejetting? Plenty of possibilities. A 33bhp restricted one would do about 100, no more.

* Longest straight I've been on is Hangar Straight at Silverstone, takes 12 seconds. It's not long. half way down is the bridge, you're already doing 100 by then.

105MPH out of my 47BHP restriction, its either restricted or needs a good service

Yeah it could be gearing and other variables limiting you. Headwind, your weight etc etc

I have sprockets sized for acceleration and I barely reach 110-115 on most tracks.

Check them first but for re-assurance book a dyno test. Usually around £30-40 for a few runs and they'll point out any defects.

Given I can quite happily see that on my 86,000 mile 1999 SV with a top box and huge panniers fitted on a commute into work I'd say there's something amiss.

Is the throttle opening the butterflies all the way?
