Curvy Chain Adjusters That Don't
My chain is a bit slack on my 1999 650S. Loosening the rear nut was a pain, so pushed out the rear spindle and greased it all up, so it goes in (and comes out) far easier. Wheel moves around when spindle is out fine and as it should.
However, totally baffled by the adjusters, as they do nothing. Took the single allen bolt out of the end of the swing arm on both sides and greased them up but they don't do anything. Do these push on the spindle, moving it forward to slacked the chain, and move back so the wheel can be pulled back to tighten the chain? |

the internal adjusters have a threaded hole in them that the adjuster bolts go into. when you wind the bolts in/out it moves the internal adjuster that is connected to the rear wheel axle.

So if you tighten the bolts the wheel moves back. The adjustment is sensitive. A chain that has worn slack usually only needs about a third of a turn on the two bolts to get the chain back to somewhere near what's needed. |

Take the end caps off the swingarm and make sure the adjusters are free and not cruded up, a bit of a clean and a grease will make things good.
I take it there is room for the adjuster to go backwards.

Maviczap-thanks! End plates had to have a chisel taken to them to get them off. The amount of crap in the swing arm was amazing-two big piles of it on the floor under the ends now. Had to smack the adjusters out with another (blunt) chisel.
Took 15 minutes to clean the adjusters and scrape out the swing arm, and everything now well greased. All went back together and everything moves easily. Thanks All! |

Pleasure It's amazing how the crud builds up in the swingarm.

Re: Curvy Chain Adjusters That Don't
My Chain adjuster marks don't match when I set my chain/Wheel parallel using a Metal Tape to measure from between the Swinging arm pin centres to the centres of the Rear Axle so I trust my TAPE and not the marks.
My 10 penn'th.

i've measured a good few sv swingarms and the markers on the swingarm are pretty spot on. |

It's an old machine and I don't mind making sure with a tape.Mine are those simple flat plate ones. They are not far out but for an extra couple of mins I don't mind

Tape for me too - centre of spindle to end of swing arm both sides. Not that I doubt Suzuki, but just what i've always done.
