I find it annoying, though, and distracting when I see it in my mirrors.

As long as drivers find it a bit more distracting ( noticeable ??? ) than their phone - fine by me, at least maybe only one person annoyed rather than the whole area and their dog ( with loud pipes ). I use the 2 second rule when following vehicles, but if I have to sit behind a car at a junction or lights I just turn the handlebars towards the kerb to avoid having light their mirror, although even main beam only shines on boot lid of most cars. I am amazed at the number of drivers of grey or dark coloured cars that drive around in rain or mist with no lights on....they are not even saving their bulbs for a rainy day.

My curvy main beams are no match for the plethora of newish vehicles out there using the latest HID lights, those are truly annoying and distracting night or day, main or dipped, I don't ride at night, I'm a 'fair weather' day light biker only so using mains on a bright sunny day is self preservation in my view. My DRL lights are far more intense than the oem headlight and the way I see it ... if I get seen well in advance I reduce my chances of being a statistic. No one has ever said ... sorry.. I didn't see you because I was momentarily blinded by your main beams!

No, but I have gone off the edge of the road blinded by an oncoming vehicle.

In daytime ? I have had sun off a car window dazzle me slightly in daylight, but never been bothered by any lights.

The sun is about 10,000 x brighter than our puny human lights. The moon is a different matter.
