Default Avon VP2 Sports

Hello all,

Well I’ve got about a month of wear/600 miles left in my current set of storms and after reading many, many, many, many threads on the pro’s and con’s that people offer for the various options available I decided to have a go on a set of new Avon VP2 Sports to see what they’re like. I know they are unlikely to last quite as well as Storms but with the dual compound tread I’m hoping they give a reasonable mileage on my mainly motorway commute, with a good load of grip & feel on the edges when I find a few corners.

Made enquiries to several places and the prices I’ve been quoted don’t vary too much, but I thought I’d share what I know so far. Prices are for 120/60ZR17 (55W) front and 160/60ZR17 (69W) rear including VAT & delivery unless stated otherwise.

Watling 01474321455 http://www.watling-tyres.co.uk/motorcycle.php
Front £81, rear £110, delivery £12. Total £203

Sea Star Superbikes 01508471919 http://www.seastarsuperbikes.co.uk/
Don’t deal in Avon, but did offer Pirelli Diablo Rosso @ £230

TyresalesUK 08448845103 http://www.tyresalesuk.co.uk/
£175.49 pair + £6.95 carriage. Total £182.44

Bike Revs 07790115628 http://www.bikerevs.co.uk/
Couldn’t give a firm price as their suppliers didn’t have stock yet, but expected around £186

Bike Tyres Leeds 0113 260 7383 http://www.biketyresleeds.co.uk/
£179 for cash & carry as they are close enough to home for me to collect, also offer full drive in/drive out or loose wheel fitting service

Furlong Motorcycle Tyres 01935425888 http://www.furlongtyres.com/
£159.60+VAT. Total £183.54

Not seen them listed on M&P or Busters yet, and so far haven't had a reply to my inquiry to Busters.

Try round and black or halifax motorcycles, rob is an avon dealer last I checked. Priced fairly reasonably.

Can you fit them yourself?

Tyre prices have gone up recent and your looking at around £30 extra on all costs. I don't want to throw a spanner in the works but what's making you move away from storms?
I would expect a storm to last around 5/6000 miles but a Viper sport will still be soft in the centre won't it?

I checked the Avon website to read up on them but there is not anything on a VP2?
Sorry I'm not trying to be rude if it's come across that way mate just wondering

You could try BCT Motorcycles in Shipley that's not too far away. www.bctmotorcycles.co.uk

There's nothing in particular that's making me move away from storms, they have been an excellent fitment on the sv giving great grip & feel and are going to have lasted about 9000miles which is ace. I just feel like trying something else and reckon if the storms are that good, how much better might the grip of the new VP2's be? I know the VP2 is unlikely to last 9000 miles, but I don't often rag it in a straight line, not much opportunity or point in commuting traffic, so the harder middle tread may just stand up to a decent mileage. But I would like just a bit more grip at the edges for playtime.

Found some info and the product datasheet on the Cambrian Tyres website here http://www.cambriantyres.co.uk/avon-tyres/1659
direct download of datasheet http://www.cambriantyres.co.uk/1660.file.dld

PS - spoke to Rob @ Halifax Motorcycle Services this morning, seems like an extremely helpful chap. He's not got a lot of info about the tyres at the mo so he suggested I call back in a week or so when he should have had chance to see the Avon rep and get the low down on expected wear and prices.
