The wheels do look a bit plain in the first photo, but rim tape isn't the answer.

considering it has excel rims already i'm loathed to spend ?lots on a set of gold wheels, rim tape actually looks ok on this bike

Looks better without the tape IMHO but as long as you like it!

It's a shame you didn't find tape the same colour as the bike as in this photo




But it's still OK - don't take it off!
