2000 SV650 (Y) have cranking but no sparks
Please help me diagnose the bike. What/how do I test in sequence to determine the source of the issue? PLEASE provide photos for the components are wires since I am a novice.

Re: 2000 SV650 (Y) have cranking but no sparks
You're going to need a voltmeter and a manual. Here's a link to a manual but the quality of the pictures is low:
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/11...999-Sv650.html Loss of spark on a curvy is often caused by a defective ignitor (aka ignition control unit) which is located in the tail but a bad plug/socket connector could also do it especially if the bikes been in a wet climate. There's a couple of voltages you can check - here's a schematic for the US curvy. So with the ignition on you'll need to measure the dc voltage at the ignitor on the orange/white wire it should be 12V (battery voltage). Connect the voltmeter's black lead to battery negative. The USA model has an anti-theft device so you'll also need to measure the voltage on the orange/red wire at the ignitor. Ideally this should be about 6v dc, but it may be lower. Have you changed the ignition switch or fitted a different system? You can also measure the voltage on the coils (orange/white) should be 12V dc. (ignition on). The coils are under the tank. If you type in the following into your browser: site: forums.sv650.org no spark it will search this forum for this problem for further ideas.

I looked at the other threads and there is a suggestion to swap out the ECU, can anyone tell me for sure if my 1st gen even has an ECU?

It's the ignitor unit Seeker mentioned in the first reply. Sometimes called CDI.

Quote:
Suzuki call it an "ignitor" in the manual but an "ignition control unit" on the wiring diagram. One other thing to check if the voltage on the orange/red wire is 0v dc at the ignitor with the ignition on. 1) Unplug the ignitor (the gizmo in the tail) 2) change the setting on your voltmeter/multimeter to Ohms (Ω) 3) switch on the ignition 4) measure the ohms (resistance) between the orange/red wire (on the ignitor plug) and battery negative it should be 100 ohms. If it isn't the ignitor won't work and it means either there's a break in the wiring between the ignitor and ignition switch or between the ignition switch and ground/earth/batt neg or the ignition switch is bad.

Re: 2000 SV650 (Y) have cranking but no sparks
I saw them in concert at the Cleethorpes Winter Gardens many years ago. The town wasn't big enough for the both of us and I left.
(never thought I'd be back) ...and no, I don't think it helps.

Re: 2000 SV650 (Y) have cranking but no sparks
I tried the 'Sparks' video but alas no joy. The replacement Ignition Control Unit finally arrived (wow! that was a painful wait). Replaced and the bike started. The break lamp is working but the other rear lamp is not working now. I must of messed up something during the attempted diagnosis. The bulb itself is fine. Can anyone spoon-feed me on how I check this ? I have my hand-dandy multi-meter ready and am awaiting your instructions.

Re: 2000 SV650 (Y) have cranking but no sparks
Thanks again for all of your advice. The Mosfet R/R arrived finally and I have installed it. I bought a new FH008EJ on ebay as the size was similar to the OEM so I could keep it on the same location. The battery voltage when the bike is running is now only 12.76 Volts however. I'm afraid it is not enough to maintain battery charge. I don't think the unit is faulty but I'm wondering if anyone can give me some tips on how to raise it to a more desired 13.5 volts?
