Traffic alerts / re-route works well in my car. What car do you have and how old? Can the software in the infotainment be updated and is it up to date?

It's a brand new Honda Civic HEV. It works if I connect it to my phone, but I don't want to do that every time I drive anywhere. The maps are old, but I don't think that'll affect the functionality, and there's nothing else to update.

If brand new, worth checking with the dealer that the on-board SIM for the car is activated and registered. The dealer should do this as part of handover process / PDI. I suspect this is the problem as your sat-nav maps should also update over the air to latest ones and apparently have not. I'm not up to speed with Hondas, but almost all modern cars have this kind of connectivity so is probably the problem.

The TCU (telematics control unit) is showing as connected, and I've signed up to Vodafone trial plan for the hotspot (even though it doesn't appear to be available in the UK). The car can check for updates itself, but the navigation bit can't. *shrug*

Lady Poppy's Ford has excellent built in nav but we just received a letter as it's coming up to a year old inviting us to pay for the renewed live traffic subscription. No idea it was based on that as the dealer kept quiet about it! I'm an Android Auto user in my (older) Ford and quite happy with it so Lady P is going to swap over as well.

Bloody weather, 2 weeks off from 17th and had a 3k trip home with an NC500 tossed in but with rain forecast almost every day and probably all day, am I nuts or just going senile to consider not just cancelling the accommodation and binning the idea?

Just accept the fact you're going to get wet and, if by chance, you don't: bonus
Besides weather forecasts beyond 3 days are notoriously inaccurate. Use the netweather.tv realtime radar to see if you can ride around showers.

That's a tough one. Weather forecasts can be inaccurate and it might actually be okay

I wasn't aware of that site, it looks really useful.

It's helpful because you can skip back almost 2 hours to see which direction the rain is heading and whether the rain is intensifying or fading. The only minor irritation I have is that the lightest blue rain indication often doesn't reach the ground and/or is intermittent drizzle.

I use it along with the visible light satellite images to make my own pre-ride weather forecasts.
