Must ride roads & must do stuff in that there Scotland..
Just in the process of planning a week(ish) long tour of Scotland for in about a months time.. So far the brief is:
- thinking of going up the west side via Loch Lomond, Glen Coe, Fort William (via loop of kinlochleven and some kind of ride by ben nevis)... - then up loch ness and then north west to Ullapool - some how from ullapool to J'o'G - then back down the eastern side through the cairngorms towards perth - finishing somewhere in edinburgh... get us to the grass market! initial route idea: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr...&via=2&t=m&z=7 Are there any bits in there which we should definitely do or definitely avoid, any particular roads to take in, is does a week sound enough to cover the above without being an iron man ass challenge riding big miles every single day? Mainly camping for most of the trip but I can imagine maybe hotel for the edinburgh night(s) so recommendations for campsites or B&B pubs would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance, Pt6

I can improve on that map by about a factor of 8, but just trying to get a wee job finished off. Leave it with me!

Turn left on the A887 just after Fort Augustus.
That way instead of heading up to Muir of Ord (rubbing roads) you can do Loch Cairron, Applecross, Gairloch and Ullapool. Edit: This was our May route. Would have liked to do more / longer days, but others said no. https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ms...7c4f2834c410c5 Last edited by MisterTommyH; 09-07-12 at 10:24 PM. |

Just in case I forget - A830 between Fort William & Mallaig (heading for the Skye ferry).
Tbh, just base your entire trip around that road and I offer you a 100% guarantee that you'll come home nursing a semi and will spend the next 3 weeks looking at house prices in the Scottish Highlands. |

Re: Must ride roads & must do stuff in that there Scotland..
i would say pick an area and do that instead of heading very north.
you've seen the best 'tourist' roads in D&G but there are loads more technical roads around that area with some stunning views. i would be inclined to go via Stirling as its easier to get threw than glasgow etc.etc. something like this http://goo.gl/maps/4aPP up to frt billy stick to the west coast and centre (right of A9) as that's where the best scenery/roads are. keep off the east coast as its crap. the main roads to the north are wide, fast and sweeping which = boring. cheapest place to the grass market would more than likley be the premier inn http://goo.gl/maps/zU3O never stayed there as i have friends and family in Edin. but if your planing on going out drinking in Edin then i would recommend up the toon http://goo.gl/maps/tJp4 (southside) as its much better and you could probably get a room in minto street for a reasonable price if you booked. i'll let others who know about west and north say about accommodation. |

Ullapool to JoG is best by doing the North west coast - past Durness. There's plenty of campsites up on the North Coast as well.
I'll dig out the routes for my last 2 tours up there. |
