Burning my cap out
Hello all have a 1st gen curvy on a 2001 plate
Got charging issues and I'm no good with eletrics Bought a multimeter and replaced the battery with a yusa yt12a bs reads 12.7 without engine started as its new when I start the her she jumped straight up 18.4 I presume this is a bad RR and just to replace the entire unit ?? Never seen it before so high and does this indicate its frying it |

Re: Burning my cap out
Yes will be a duff voltage Regulator as 18+ volts will fry a battery in short order. Somewhere around 14volts a more normal charging rate on 12v electrics.
A quick look on eBay shows new RR units available from around £18 - have to wonder whether they'd be as robust as O.E. but God knows how much a new one from Suzuki would be and a new cheapie probably still a better bet than a typical used item

Yes, bad RR.
Get yourself an Eletrex one to replace yours Be aware that curvy's had two types, one had a single connector, the other (probably later ones) had two connectors Mine was a 2002 and had the two connectors https://www.electrexworld.co.uk/cgi-...O&ACTION=Go%21

Re: Burning my cap out
Meanwhile dont run it with that sort of charge going into the new battery or you will be buying another one very shortly.

Re: Burning my cap out
When the Reg/Rec packed up on my TDM850 it not only fried the battery, but also blew most of the bulbs and took out the ignition module / ECU before I realised what the problem was
So yeah, isn't much on a 12V electrical system that likes a sustained 18 volts through it

Re: Burning my cap out
The cheap Chinese ebay regs are a big gamble and not worth it IMO. Some people have had luck with them, plenty have not and some of the regulators have little but sand inside them.

Re: Burning my cap out
If you do fit an Electrex World one you will need to move it to under the pillion seat or wherever you can fit it as bigger than the Suzuki item & tail piece won't fit back on, plus altering the wiring to suit if you have the gear to & can solder. I didn't so returned the Electrex item for a refund and check the original regularly.
