Default Pointy speedo random numbers?

Hi Guys,

Please can someone give me some advice on what to check next.

The speedo on my K3 suddenly started going mental, sometimes is works fine and sometimes its like a number generator. I have had the front wheel off and the rotor is like new.

I can't see anything wrong with the wire leading from the sensor to the plug but i did notice that the area where the plugs (just infront of the airbox) is covered in ****. I unplugged the speedo and sprayed in some WD-40, still no joy, just the same.

Never had any probs with the speedo until now.

What else can i check?

Si

All the main lives around the bike, intermittent power will cause this.

Start at battery and main fuse.

As a matter of interest WD40 isn't a very good contact cleaner, it's primary function is moisture dispersent, if the pins have oxidation (green colouring) you'll need to clean them.

also worth checking the cable hasn't been routed badly at some point and crushed around the headstock, the other one would be a poor earth on that circuit.

Cheers Mark.

I'll tag my question to this thread as its similar. My k9 speedo stopped working yesterday. Read 0 for a while but then starts going crazy like a lie detector test.

Only recent change was replacing the shovel with a tidy, so disconnecting/reconnecting wiring (I assume correctly), except for what looks like a ground earth wire which I neglected to put back underneath a nut on the subframe.

Other instruments on dash and lights are working fine but also discovered my heated grips won't turn on. I suspect the two are connected but there's no visual damage and I've made no changes to wiring up front.

Any suggestions?

No suggestions? Guess I'll have to post up a new thread.

OP: Does it provide you with random numbers whether moving or not?

Chill dude! We're not waiting here in anticipation of a speedo fault.

Same question to you.

What? Not good enough!

Started on 0. After 30 miles started jumping, then went crazy ... all over the shop. I did search forum first. Some say if stuck on 0, its the rotor. If jumping all over, its electric.

My problem's a little different cause my heated grips also stopped working. All lights, indicators etc working. As above, only recent alteration was shovel. There's a gap between tail fairing and tail tidy which was covered by the shovel but I don't suppose water gets up there. But this is the only change and all was working fine before.

Does it do when the bike is turned on but not running?
