Admittedly yes they do use a lot of battery. An external battery makes it last tho'.

Well I have been looking at the etrex and the specs seem pretty good. Seems to tick all the boxes and has a compass which the Dakota doesn't.

compass works too, but its a gps compass so you need to be moving. Good for guiding you to the cache though.

I'm also a cacher, I've had an etrez 30 which was good, now use a Oregon 450 and it really good ,not cheap new though

Also use iPhone 4s but it eats battery, works well though but drifts a lot under trees etc

I have picked up a Dakota 20 from Ebay. Seems a pretty good bit of kit so far. Only played around a little. Compass works without moving which is handy.
