Default Rough Lumpy Idle

When I started the bike on saturday after warming the engine up for 30 sec (choke revs @2500rpm) I noticed that the revs jump from 1300rpm to 1600rpm & then all the way down to 1000rpm and the bike makes a noise as if it is about to stall but dousn't.

Took it for a 30 min spin. Still the same problem.

Ideas ?

It just had a new air filter (stock), iridium plugs are 3000 miles old.

Carbs sync? Choke cables sticking? Both the most possible causes

I would tend to look at what you changed just before it played up.Are the plugs good and did you put the HT leads on properly?Did you disturb the airbox seating to the carbs? This can cause an air leak into the system and lead to odd running. Is the breather pipe still connected to the air box?
The chokes can stick at the carb end and the front one is tricky to check.

didn't change anything recently. Airbox sits tight, all pipes connected etc.

the revs are only jumping @ idle

As soon as I give it some throttle the revs stay

I had the same problem last month.....checked all above still ran crap so chucked in some Wynn's Dry Fuel (half the bottle for yer bike to a full tank). If you've any water in there, which mine must have had, it just chucks it out and hey presto !!! I got it for £4.37 from an independant car shop so if it's not that, no great loss of money !!!

didn't have time this afternoon to check but when I started the bike it made a big bang - like backfiring.

& since then the idle is ok again

Choke cable...yes really. It may look ok, but can be a bugger.
