Default Optical illusion...

So, there I was, Friday afternoon, in the motor with the good lady and the kids. I was reversing into a parking slot - the two spaces either side were occupied. I had reached the point where the car was straight & level so I started using the rear view mirror to 'eye' the car in the slot behind. As I slowly applied the brakes when I figured the distance between the bumpers was about right, my peripheral vision picked up movement on either side - the two cars there had started rolling out at exactly the same time. My brain interpreted this movement as our car still moving. So in about three seconds then, from known control of the motor, I was now in a state of total confusion as I had the clutch depressed, the brake pedal was being forced throught the floor but my brain reckoned that the car was still moving! Christ on a bike! Speedo check, feet on correct pedals check - another second went by and I eventually looked properly left & right - finally realising what had happened! Too late for my brain though - completely switched to custard Once we were parked up, I just sat in the car for twenty minutes to let my brain unscramble itself - never has anything (as far as I can recall) had such a profound effect on the old grey matter - two days later and I'm still amazed at how jellified I was (Do you think its age related or just the fact that I was in a car?!)

Anyone else have something similar happen?

Yep!

Sitting at traffic lights in the car.

Cars on both sides of me were edging forward.

I was SURE that I was rolling back into the bloke behind.

Just stood on the brake and demn near bent it before I realised WTF was happening.

On a different occasion - taking the family on holiday - towing a caravan

-- Ducks and runs for cover --

came to a place called "The devils punchbowl"

I will swear that the car was rolling Uphill, in neutral, and picking up speed

Wierdest feeling Ive had in a car!

I DONT TOW CARAVANS ANYMORE --- honest!

Yeah.
Me and this lad were walking over a desert, having come off a massive snow plain. Miles and miles of white, onto empty desert.
Anyway, we came over a hill, and there was this bizzare view in front of us, and neither of us had a clue what had just happened. We sort of stood there, trying to ctrl-alt-del our brains.

In this big desert, there was a lake, perfectly flat, no wind, and it stretched to the horizon (which wasnt that far away actually). Since it was so flat, the sky just looked like it was in the ground. Everything was so quiet, we hadnt seen water for so long, and whatever shape the lake made it was like there was a massive piece of the earth missing, just a big gap.

Very odd.
And, there was an old silver crashed plane in the foreground there just to top things off.

Anyone else get that reversing feeling when they're on a train and it stops?
