Default Immediate stall on my 2000 SV650 (Y)

I have recently swapped out spark plugs and cleaned Air filter with a compressed air can. It is taking a few attempts to get it started with an immediate stall even with a choke setting. Not particularly cold here in NY. I've tightened the Spark plugs to spec. I was careful not to pinch any wires when I lowered the fuel tank. What do you think I've messed up?

Have you trapped the fuel line?

No fuel, no go

When you say: "it is taking a few attempts to get it started" - does it sound like it is firing on both cylinders or do you have an SV325?

You do occasionally get bad spark plugs and the SV plug leads/caps are known to fail with age.

fuel line and vacuum line seem to be fine but I will check again when I go out now that I have the diagram.

Is there an easy way to tell if only one cylinder is firing? It works fine once it starts and doesn't stall. It is just taking several attempts each time I start up.

...the exhaust note sounds "wrong" (laboured, flat) because there are too few firing pulses and the bike doesn't respond quickly to throttle. It's like there's a delay between opening the throttle and revs picking up and when they do pick up it's in a lethargic manner.

just to clarify the above quote: does it occasionally start (however reluctantly) and then run normally or does it stall every time?

I used to live in SoCal and my 2000 SV always needed a bit of choke to start and keep running.

It stalls first few times with poor response from throttle, eventually it starts and keeps running. Would that suggest the fuel/vacuum hose are fine?

Did you take the airbox off when you serviced it? Are you sure it is properly back on its rubber mountings with no leaks? Did you disturb the two crankcase breather pipes which go into the airbox? Make sure they are both back on properly. Then service the choke plungers as they always need doing.

Thanks Biker Biggles,
I just unscrewed air filter and replaced. didn't remove full airbox.

yes, the vac/fuel lines are ok if the bike is capable of starting/running normally eventually, assuming that it rides ok too (no popping in the exhaust - which would suggest a weak mixture). It sounds like it is starting on one cylinder so Biker Biggles suggestion of checking the choke plungers is a good one.

Was it doing this before you serviced it?

No, it was working fine before swapped out spark plugs and removed air filter. It seems to be starting better now actually but I will definitely check the Choke Plungers when I get a chance.

Thank you all for your gracious advice!!!!
