caliper rebuild

My calipers have decided to lock up so the pads are pushed against my disks.

i have got gsxr srad calipers, are there easy to rebuild? and how do i rebuild them?

i was told that i need to change the seals?

i need to get this sorted asap now as i have to use the bike tomorrow.

Depending on the amount of crud and damage to the calipers/seals/pistons depends on how easy/difficult it will be.

Never worked on GSXR calipers, but i would imagine that it is as straigth forward as an SV caliper. If youa re careful and no damage has been done, maybe you can just get away with a strip, and clean.

You will need to get the pistons out. There are many ways of doing this. My personal preference is to take remove the calipers from the mounts and leaving the pads in, push the pistons out using the lever. They they should wiggle out by hand (Once you have removed the pads) or with a pair of pliers (Remember to be gentle on the surface and grip as little of the piston as you can. Another way is to fire them out using compressed air. Fire them into a bucket of water.

Once this is doen, pick the seal out with a tooth pick or something non metal. If theya re realy crudded up, then a new seal kit may be in order! check the seal carefully. scrape the crud out of the grooves the seals fit in. If the dust seals are deforemd, drop them into a cup of boiling water, they should regain thier shape. Clean the pisotns up as well using brake cleaner and if need be fine wire wool. Any gouges or deep scrathes, then you will need new piston(s).

Clean it all out using plenty of brake cleaner and refit the seals in thier correct grooves. then if you can get hold of some, use red rubber grease on the seals and the pistons and put back together, then re fit to bike and bleed the brakes.

Use plenty of brake cleaner. Unless you are lucky and can get all the parts, you might not be ont he bike tomorrow!

They're a bit more involved than stock SV ones, make sure you get the inner pistons out first, then if needs be you can seal the outer caliper half off and get those out that way.

i went to suzuki today and they want just shy of £90 for the seals for the front calipers!!!

i really need to rescue what ive got for now because i havent got the money at the moment.

im going to get the calipers off and then try to remove the pistons however im not understanding exactly what has been written here to get them out.

is it an easy enough job to do if you have no problems with the brakes (eg just to be sure??)

Just the slight spring in the seals and the spring in the master cylinder in normal use.

Or do you mean to get them out? You use fluid pressure for that.

Negative fluid pressure when you release the brake lever.

sorry what i mean is when they are fitted to the bike properly and all working.

when you pull the brake the pads are going to close onto the discs, how do they retract themselves?
