engine painting advice

Hi guys,

Tomorrow morning i will begin the process of removing the enging from my SV's frame in order to paint it. However i am struggling to find a thorough guide on the internet as to the best methods. So i know you need to remove all loose flakes of paint and give it a really good degrease but thats about all i know.

Essentially i would be really greatful if you guys could give me a good run down on the best methods, best paints, and pretty much any tips youve got.

You dont really need the heat resistant paints for motorbike blocks as they don't get that hot (water cooled). Also the colours on these paints are limited.

A good paint is the dark grey silver metalic colour that is used for respaying ali wheels.

Its worth using a auto paint remover to clean off the earlier paint if your block is heavily pitted.

Remember if your spraying at this time of year, you might have to sort out a way to bake the block between coats if your doing thick coats. Big cardboard box and a small electric fan heater for 5 hours.

I'm not a big fan of the Hammerite as theres not as wide a choice of colours and not sure how easy it would be to remove the hammerite paint ?

An enamel paint will be more resilient imo, you can use a heat gun to heat the surface prior to spraying and again to bake the paint, makes a huge difference to the end result and how long it lasts.
I done a rocker cover on my old golf gti a few years ago and that lasted, in fact i eventually got a chrome one and the paint still hadnt flaked or anything.

A good place to look for specialist paints like that is frost`s in rochdale.

Also in the original post you said you already know how to remove the loose flakes, so how did you do it

only just seen this thread but if its any use, I did this on the curvy which roberrrt now owns.
I dropped the engine out, cleaned it off with a strong degreaser (the paste stuff not the spray) and a stiff wire brush did that a few times leaving it to soak in each time. Once cleaned off I used PJ1 Satin black spray paint, as far as I know its holding up perfectly well and intend to do this to pointy engine if I dont sell it off.

How easy is it to drop the engine out in terms of hours to get it out and then back again?

Well the engine is out, it took me around 3 hours once everything in the way was removed (tank, airbox). It has been degreased and the loose paint is off ready to be painted. Update should follow some time tomorrow!!
