A common gripe - insurance!

Just had my renewal notice for home insurance and it had DOUBLED in price from last year!!! WTF? Time for cost comparisons, but with all the news about premiums going up I'm not hopeful.

Yep, wife's insurance quote for a 23 yr old MR2 Roadster went from £190 to £347. She managed to get a deal though.

Our quote from Avia is £100 more than last year!

Similar story here. Home insurance doubled in price. Car insurance up from £135 to £220. In both cases, I managed to get much better prices by going through the comparison sites.
Bike insurance renewal is due next month. I can't wait to see what joy that brings.

Just renewed my house insurance with Aviva, the price had gone up about 25% which from what I read isn't bad at all. I've too much stuff on at the moment to be bothered shopping around. Having said that, the T&C's are pretty good compared to a lot, the devil is always in the small print with insurance, so I'm not too concerned anyway.
Watch out for T&C's, a friend had a water leak (frozen/thawed pipe) last year and discovered/realised he was significantly under-insured so ended up getting a reduced payout even after lots of haggling and ombudsman involvement etc..

Similar story for me too. Seems that 25-30% uplift is typical.

Wife's car insurance was nearly 30% up on renewal a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully tolerable in £s because we're old etc. (Still checked comparison sites but they were all coming up as more expensive still.)

Son's renewal has just landed and he's up more than £200 (over 35%) compared to last year. One of this weekend's tasks is to help with seeing if we can improve the situation - oh the joy!

Not looking forward to house and bike renewals coming in later in the year.

I'm (procrastinating about) fixing up an old Yamaha FZ600 to get myself fully back on the road.

There is a large number of people who should be going to prison for this, and it certainly shouldn't have been postmasters.

My best friend and ex-roommate in the US passed away this morning. Talmage Bartlett came into my life after my divorce when I needed a roommate and I came to rely on his judgement. He had an uncanny ability to read people and within minutes of talking to them could deduce their motivations which helped enormously in dealing with my ex wife. The only times his perception let him down was in his personal relationships - he was gay and consistently picked awful people that even I could see were not good news.

He had a photographic memory and he described it as a video tape that he could rewind and playback. It was offputting when he could recount what you'd told him word for word. He could read a manual once and then tell you what to do without any mistakes. He was the smartest person I have ever met.

Fortunately for the rest of us he was a procrastinator and lazy otherwise he'd be ruling the world. He often said he felt he was living amongst aliens because people couldn't see the truth of what they wanted and how to get it. I will miss him.

I'm sorry to hear that, S. You very rarely encounter people like that in your life, and it's even rarer to become close friends with them.

Sounds like an amazing guy. It must have been a privilege to know him.
