Like rear discs on cars, a clear case of 'form over function' just because 'they look better with alloys and more modern than drums' (rear discs are pants, they collect all the crud that is going, the discs rust, the pads don't last long, and no springs to pull friction surface away from disc so always dragging - and still pretty pants as a handbrake - I have had over 100,000 miles out of rear shoes on a couple of cars, in that time I would have replaced pads 3 or 4 times and discs at least once).
