Default Replacing bearings

How the hell do you get new bearings back into the wheels? I've tried using the old ones as recommended in the haynes manual but they just get stuck too!

Sorry if this is a stupid question, any advice appreciated!

Get a length of threaded bar, some large washers, some nuts to go one the bar. Place bearings in the wheel tap in getly(so they dont fall out)
place bar through bearings
Place washers on bearings
Do up nut either side and wind the bearings in

Put the bearings in the freezer for 10mins then imediatly put them on the wheel before they warm up.

Use a bench grinder - angle grinder at a push - to run the outer race of the old bearings down a dab, then use them to drift the new ones in. At a push use a drift to very carefully and squarely knock them in, make sure you don't whack inner race, make sure they go in square all the way along, use this method only if no better alternative.

I wouldn't use washers, you need something very stiff to apply force to the outer race only, don't press on the inner race at all, worst case the new ones will be duffed as soon as you fit them, but you might be lucky.

I normally use the old bearing as far as possible then have a look through the socket sets. Find a socket that has a clearance fit and use that to tap the new bearing fully home.

Job done! Put the bearings in the freezer and drove them in with a socket. Does the left hand one sit deeper towards the wheel than the right? There seems to be a lip on the right hand side so it sits on the ledge then theres a slight gap before the 'main' hole.

Hope that makes sense?

There is one that goes on a lip & should be properly seated, then the spacer and the last bearing goes in making sure you dont move the other bearing out again otherwise the wheel will not be centered properly.

Does it matter which order you put them in, as long as both sets of bearings are in with the spacer?

Yes, The spacer on the right side (i think) has to be flush with the little shelf in the hub. turn the wheel over and put the spacer in then put the last bearing in and drive it down till it mates with the spacer but not pushing out the other bearing.
