OMO: Suggest a poison (Herbicide actually)
Right, my garden has gotten out of hand, I've let it grow for almost two years and now I need to reclaim it, I want to effectively nuke it and start again. what is my best bet for a pretty effective, ideally pet friendly herbicide. and large scale deployment? I've got quite an area so needs to be cheap for a bulk lot and have a good delivery method, backpack sprayer perhaps?

I've got a strimmer, it seems like too much hard work, plus some of the weeds are bigger than me

Roundup 3000,get the concentrate and mix it stronger than they recommend.
But you do know that even if you kill the plants it wont dissolve them right? So you might as well strim it flat and dispose of that before applying weedkiller to any green growth left over. |

Damn, yeah I knew they wouldn't just disappear, thought they might be easier to rake out of the ground though when they had died.
Guess there is no shortcut for it, will just have to get some cord for my strimmer (or maybe a brush cutting blade!) and set to it, thanks for the advice guys.

Re: OMO: Suggest a poison (Herbicide actually)
Also worth noting that most systemic weedkillers which will kill the roots (like roundup) will ONLY work when applied to the green parts of a plant so you may need to wait for a little bit of new growth after strimming to get the transport system going again.
(N.B. the active ingredient in roundup and most systemic weedkillers is glyphosate, the difference between commercial and normal brands is usually strength, thats why i suggested getting concentrate.) Last edited by Spank86; 19-06-12 at 01:57 PM. |

Re: OMO: Suggest a poison (Herbicide actually)
If there's Horsetail, I don't think any commercial weedkillers shift it (glyphosphate doesn't) get hold of Ammonium Sulphamate (ebay or Amazon) dissolve it in some warm water with a bit of soap (to get through the wax on the leaves) and spray away....will take more than one application on growing plants....kills woody plants as well, but doesn't touch grass....generally starts to kill off in a couple of days.
This stuff has roots up to 5ft down so quite hardy.
