Default Ground Anchor

Hi Guys

Recently just brought an apartment and under the kitchen window is a grassed area. we have been told we can fit some sort of anchor here for my girlfriends scooter.

does anybody have any idea on which product to use and how to go about it due to it being fitted in grass.

cheers guys

I'm not expert on the matter, but if it was on a lawn by the kitchen window, I'd say you have two options. Either a wall mounted ground anchor under the kitchen window, or digging a trench in the lawn (a rectangular one running along the next to the wall would probably look tidiest aesthetically), filling that with concrete/cement and the ground anchor set in that. Be aware that if it's a big hole you're setting it in, the ground anchor may well sink down a bit into the concrete as it sets and not wind up level with the floor (not a huge problem, but doesn't look too tidy). You could either put some gravel under the bit where the ground anchor itself will go, or part fill the trench to the level where the ground anchor would go down to and let it set, then do a second layer with the ground anchor in place.

Oh and of course you should make the area of cement/concrete big enough that it can't just be lifted out with the bike. One other thing you could do to make it look a bit tidier is set the top of the filled trench a bit below ground level, then re-cover most of it (just leaving a few inches around the ground anchor bare) with the turf (make sure there's enough soil on top that the grass won't die in the heat). Effectively, the base the ground anchor would be set in would extend out horizontally below the surface of the grass.

Parking on grass is okay short term but being in the same place every day is going to turn it into a muddy patch very quickly.

Put paving slabs down, use a wall anchor instead, these are nearly as strong as the ground ancher. The weakest part of your security system will likely be the chain, if the chain is suspended it cannot easily be attacked by the hit it with a hammer method, if you lock the bike close to a wall there is also little room for the thiefs the work.

Waste of time fitting one in grass, best bet is to get a bolt on one and bolt it to the wall under the kitchen window! Its better than nothing.

If you go to a garden centre /DIY store, you might be able to pick up a corkscrew type ground anchor. Unless the perp decides to dig up the grass it would be difficult(almost impossible?) for them to unscrew it with a chain / scooter attached.
But the safest thing would be to have something bolted to the wall with the chain off the ground.

A couple of slabs for the bike to sit on and a concreted in ground anchor between the slabs, the recessed ones are good for this.
