Re: sv650 top speed?
I think we're actually in agreement, in that we both agree that weight only comes into play in terms of how it affects the road surface resistance.... as opposed to affecting the speed in any other fundamental way like it affects the acceleration in a fundamental physical way i.e. F=ma., but maybe you were never suggesting that anyway.

Nah... rolling resistance is tiny compared to drag, and can be reduced by slightly higher tyre pressures. We're still talking tiny amounts, I very much doubt an average rider would notice. In fact I doubt you would be able to notice the difference on a test strip within the errors present. You say you do it for a living? So give us some examples of power loss by rolling resistance.

Re: sv650 top speed?
Tom, there is a very negligible difference in frictional resistance due to to weight differentials but the effect of drag is significantly more when talking about achievable top speeds.
Have a look at any speed record attempt vehicle, they are all streamlined to reduce drag and they run wheels/tyres that provide the least rolling resistance. What gets more time spent on it? The aero package. Old 'dustbin' or streamliner bikes of yesteryear with a mammoth 30hp or so could still go better than 150mph. The SV would be in the same ballpark come weight but cannot attain that speed. Stick a 70hp engine in one of the old streamliners and see what speed it attains. The effect of drag is cubed, not a linear equation like friction. Racers get put in wind tunnels so that they can improve their position to reduce drag, simple things like having a foot out by an inch or two can be worth a couple of km/h alone. Compare and contrast the ZX-12R and the Hyabusa (before the limiting devices were fitted). The zx-12 made more power, weighed a similar amount but the Hyabusa outdoes it for top speed. Why? Less drag. Last edited by PeterM; 11-07-08 at 08:25 AM. |

Re: sv650 top speed?
140 on the clock down an autobahn earlier this year, going up a slope. Still more to come but was catching traffic up so had to back off.
Didnt really want to try again as I had a repaired puncture on the rear tyre. =S |

Re: sv650 top speed?
The most I've had out of my restricted pointy SV is 96 and it still had a little left but I was approaching thicker traffic.

Re: sv650 top speed?
aerodynamics of the fairing design are a major factor to top speed , i dont care really as i ride a naked SV650K8 "best fun i have had with my clothes on"

Re: sv650 top speed?
I hit 140 (on the speedo) the other night and it was still pulling, but didn't look at the rev counter. I then bottled it, as it was too dark, and too fast!

Re: sv650 top speed?
Ive done 15 knots in a 100,000 ton supertanker. That was on the flat,no wind and at sea level.Trouble is when you thrash them they burn more oil than they carry.
