Matt Oxley has a book called 'stealing speed' covering this topic. Not read it myself but I'm sure it's worth a read.

It's an excellent book, thoroughly recommended. It details the dogged brilliance of Kaaden in developing the MZ racers despite the constraints of being in the Eastern bloc, and it's also sympathetic to why Degner defected.

Here's a great story about how Alan Shepherd won the 1964 250cc US GP for MZ with no team support and no mechanics, after having to drive from his home in the North West of England to the East German border to collect the bike, then back to London for the flight to Daytona:
