Default bike cut out, and now dead.... info and help pls!

well its a 99 650s.
was riding back from sherburn yday, put flicked hi-beam on, but it swithed the dip beam off??
carried on with dipped beam, flicked to high beam again,
then the bike seemed to loose all electrics, enough so to not power the spark and the bike came to a halt.....
batterys got good life in it, 12V.
when i try put the ignition on nothing happens...
all the fuses are ok.... i checked resistance and continuity of the ignition switch tonight at the 1st conector block from the barrel.
all resistances are fine execpt the black striped and the orange striped wires.
with the ignition 'on' the resistance between these 2 wires is 0.10 ohms.
whereas resistance between the rest is 0.001.
is this resistance fine or is it causing the ignition to stay off and immobilising the bike???
any advise on where to check next?
tried to give all info as poss! all help is much apreciated!

thnx liam

Have a look around the headstock for damaged wires, very common with the SV's.

The dipped beam doesn't work with the high beam unless you use the pass (flash) button.

wil check for the dodgy wires tmoz after work...

as for the lights, when flicking to hig beam,
the lights just went off all together.... flick back to dip beam and dip beam would work again.
were workin fine before hand, and changing the lights seemed to cause the bike to die.
just puzzled why the ignition wotn come on atall now tho!
will jus have to crack on with it again tomorrow.
thnx for reply D-Dave!

Similar thing happened to me but I just lost all electrics.

Try fidling about about with the power block under the right hand seat panel (zaust side). Seems to work/ed for me on more than one occasion.

Yes this is perfectly fine, it's meant to be like that.

It sounds to me as if you may have a short circuit in the hi-beam circuit and you've blown the main fuse when you put it on.

well the only fuse i didnt check was the 1 that was blowing, duh.
druid seems you were right.....
it was the high beam blowing the fuse!
i traced the wiring and eventually found the wire had worn through on the 'riders seat bolt mount' on the n/s.
itd had chaffed the ins-tape and the outer cover of the wire but had not worn through the wire.
i taped up the wire and a few others that had begun wearing, put lots of ins-tape round the lot, plastic wiring cover over the lot and then cable tied it away from the bolt mount.
and now its goes and doesnt blow fuses! result!
happy to be back on the bike, the 4 days without werent good!
thnx all for advise!
