Default engine noise.

hi all new on here and new to SV's just got myself a 03 plate mk1 650.
On tick over the engine sounds like a very slow machine gun (sorry my best description) but when up and running its sounds fantastic, i am told this noise is normal, should I be worried? or should i take my mates word for it?

tick over is always going to sound rubbish but then its only tick over once you get the bike rolling as long as it sounds fine then i shouldnt worry however if you hear clonking noises and banging then you should be worried lol!!

The idle should be between 1200 and 1300 rpm i believe.

My curveys set at 1300 just because sounds like itd cut out at 1200 rpm. but 1200rpm would be better as its saves fuel and looks like we all need to save fuel the way things are going lol!

Is the bike due for a service or is one coming up sometime soon, if so mention it to the mechanic but from what you describe it sounds ok.

Leave the bike to idle for a bit and see if there is a change in noise when you pull the clutch in, a little rattle is nothing to worry about (as mentioned above).

thanks for that the bike does sound fine once its in gear and going, i only get the noise when its ticking over, the revs are about 1300, the next thing I want to do is fit a stubby exhaust, is there one available for my bike without re-jetting etc??

the noise almost sounds like the exhaust is blowing but its not, as soon as i pull away in first or even rev it in nuetral its fine

Yeah, loads! Scopion make a stubby exhaust which seems to be popular with SV riders on this forum. There is no need to rejet/remap the fuelling on SV's whether Curvy or Pointy as a slip on can is not going to make any difference in performance.

Are you sure, have you thoroughly checked?

As I mentioned before, leave it to idle and pull the clutch in and see if there is a difference in noise (leave it in neutral when you pull the clutch in).
