Default Reducing insurance

Dear All,

Does anyone have any practical ways to reduce insurance premiums? I am thinking of doing the IAM on my bike. Is there anything else I can do, other than wait for the no claims discount to start kicking in?

Cheers,
msr

Various things can make a difference, some big some small.

- Move to a lower risk area; big reduction.
- Build a garage; big reduction, but refer to the first item, if you're already in a low risk area can be no difference at all.
- Get a bike in a lower group; can be a big reduction.
- Fit an approved alarm, small reduction, huge cost - typically £300, unless an insurance requirement there's better security for that sort of money.
- Do one (or all) of the various advanced tests; small reduction ~ 5%
- In some cases join a recognised owners club; ~ up to 5%
- Get older; big reduction
- Get experienced, new riders and those with a gap in their insurance history pay more.

Sadly, if there were any magic tips we'd all know them by now.

I refer you to the above comment.

I never said it would be easy.

Is it still possible to get someone else to insure a vehicle and you as a named driver? I know it used to be one way of avoiding paying too high a premium.

Most insurance companies won't do this with bikes nowadays, and those that will generally calculate the premium by assessing the dearest rider/driver and then adding a percentage for each other rider/driver, typically 10%.

So it won't be cheaper, not a bit, oh no.

Which is shame, as this is exactly what myself and my Dad did with a Suzuki 750 about -*Passage Deleted*- years ago.

I am insured on my wife's car insurance as a named driver. Never had my own car insurance.

Try to find the name and address of a bike cop and put him on even if he doesnt know. My mate tried a quote with a Cabinet Minister on his insurance and found it went down! I cant see how it is illegal......although someone will prob tell me
