air box removal questions
Ive read about the removing the top of the air box mod, but what would happen if you completly removed it?
would it just run really lean? Would a good dyno set up cure this creating more power and worse fuel economy? Is their an important role that the air box plays? cheers |

Re: air box removal questions
running it really lean will damage your engine. I've got one of mine de snorkelled, but it has been re jetted to suit. If I put a snorkelled filter in now, it runs really carp. I would imagine it would be the same if you were to have standard jets with a de-snorkel.
The airbox is there for a reason, wouldn't want any kack in the rest of your bike would you?

Re: air box removal questions
You can get away with desnorkelling the pointies airbox.
Basically the airbox acts as a resonating chamber, changes to the airbox volume affect the power delivery. Can give a boost at certain rpms. JHS sell a retaining band so you can get rid of the airbox lid. Needs dyno set up. Not that different fuel economy, as you won't use that extra power all the time.

Re: air box removal questions
So once the de snorkelling and re jetting has been done, is what remains of the air box just their to protect?
Wouldnt the air filter be effective enough at stopping bits? |

Re: air box removal questions
Yes, different filter design completely.
Also you can't rejet a pointy, it doesn't have any jets , you remap an injected bike [/pedant]

Re: air box removal questions
The air box is different for a start... you can get cone filters but I have been told they are a right pain to set-up.

Re: air box removal questions
Removing the airbox and fitting filters directly to the carbs was a waste of time for me, but the bike ain't standard so I can't comment on a standard or lower state of tune engine.
