Speedo Drive Unit
On my way back from a 4 day trip to Wales (from living on the Norfolk coast) with about 200 miles to go to home the speedo stopped working.
At first it was throwing all kinds of speeds up, eventually getting less and less until it just displayed 0mph on the dash the rest of the way home. Im guessing the speedo drive unit needs replacing, has anyone done this before? Is it fairly simple? 2003 pointy. Thanks |

Re: Speedo Drive Unit
Yep, it's probably the rotor in the hub that's broken. Wheel off, new speedo new rotor, replace wheel.
Should be as simple as that

Re: Speedo Drive Unit
I can get the rotor and cable on ebay 2nd hand for about £30/£40. Does the rotor just pull out/push into the hub of the front wheel? If so all I need to do is sort a front stand out.

Re: Speedo Drive Unit
This is what you most likely need:
http://www.wemoto.com/parts/picture/sz-34983-21e00/ There are a number of ways of raising the front without a stand, if you have a car jack and stands or handy bits of wood. Straps and a strong garage ceiling or stepladder is also an option.

Re: Speedo Drive Unit
Is yours dead, or does it give a false reading?
Mine decided to go a bit hay wire. It would be fine up until about 55 ish then give false info. The speed it started to go gradually got lower until it was doing it above 30. Took wheel off, cleaned it all off, nothing looked broken. It turned out the flange part had come loose from the body of the rotor, dodgy push fit part. Anyhow took it apart, it fell apart really out came the Gorilla glue. Left ages to properly harden. Works perfectly. This was about 6 months ago. Take it apart first to have a look before you buy anything, you might not need it. Just be careful lining it all back up when you put it back together or you'll snap a lug off. Re: Speedo Drive Unit
as said the rotor part is a keyed fitting with the wheel. its normally ham fisted tyre fitters that smash them.

Re: Speedo Drive Unit
Finally managed to get in the garage and get it apart. It was the little rotor, all 4 teeth had sheered off, I'm sure its probably gone over time one at a time, not all at once.
£26 for the new bit, should sort it. For anyone else who may think about taking it to a garage to get done its dead simple no tools required to pull the rotor out the wheel etc. Cheers chaps. |
