yorkie_chris your comments are valid but don't apply to all situations.

I'd always suggest panniers and boxes are kept in the tent overnight but a top box is inherently much more secure than soft panniers when you're on the move. And very much easier to dip into as and when you need.

Yes, keeping kit absolutely dry in all conditions in soft luggage requires plastic liners. But... when the road's wet, in light rain and in heavy downpours I've found that the rain covers on the Oxford Sports work fine. They've never leaked, shifted or flapped about; but I'm only talking prolonged speeds of 80-90mph .

I like absolutely dry kit. You can't predict weather before you set off*, and it only takes one heavy downpour and you've got a soggy *rse for the next week.

*Well you can, but you're going to Scotland, so it'll be wrong.

Smug smile-----The old Triumph fixed panniers have waterproof made to measure inner holdalls---The panniers have locking lids and attatchements capable of holding two helmets when you remove your holdalls and park up for the night. I have never had wet kit apart from what I was wearing and another bonus of the YH'S is most have drying rooms so even that is all good for the next day so no wet a--e next day YOU LIVE AND LEARN

nothing better than having proper kit, that's why I wanted another tuono and bought this..and mine has a 46 litre top box

But im planning on going a loooong way.

Look at this kit..

http://www.ventura-bike.com/products/bikepack.aspx

Big bag you can turn around off the pillion seat, use it and when ur done sell it on for a good proportion of the purchase price.

Unless of course you are called Pingu and you manage to lock yourself out of your topbox at a certain Scottish rideout...bit TOO secure for my liking that

I'm inclined to agree with Chris on the rain cover front. They tend to rip themselves to tatters; shake loose, melt, catch fire. IMO, it is far safer and easier (not to mention better at keeping things dry) to put the stuff inside the bags in something waterproof and then accept the outer bag will get wet. That is, unless you use luggage which really is 100% waterproof (Ortlieb dry bag, Anything from Kriega).

2 up + distance + best = Topbox.

She's secure, she knows all her gear is secure....and dry, so she is happy, so I'm happy and can crack on and concentrate on *ahem* keeping the front down.

You can keep the box (and sometimes the top plate)for your next bike and just buy the appropriate rails. Go for 3 boxes etc. An investment then.

I'll just have a baglux tank bag on there for my stuff and we are good to go for 2 weeks (no camping, right enough.)

Andy,
TopBox Loyal.
