On the plus side at least you can access your files.

Re live sessions, I remember back in the day when I was first experimenting with Linux, the PCLinuxOS CD had an option to load a live session into RAM and it ran fast as a fast thing.
It used the "toram" boot parameter.

I am running the latest Ubuntu 64 bit. Computer is so much faster! I did some reading and apparently the last MS update bricked a lot of computers. My only option would be to reinstall Windows but right now I cannot be bothered. I can get online, surf, email and even play some of my Steam games.

Planned obsolesence is part of why PCs come with Windows installed.
PC companies are guaranteed repeat sales as the OS inevitably falls apart.

In July 2008 I took delivery of a laptop that had Vista installed.
Vista got wiped shortly afterwards.
It currently has Xubuntu on, has had an upgrade to an SSD and runs faster than it did when new.
Hate to think how much cash would have been required to keep up with hardware and OS upgrades in that time.

If your tower boots from an internal drive with Linux installed it may last you a good few years yet.

Is the mobo sata controller definitely goosed or is it the OS?
Could be a new Windows "security feature" - if it can't boot its safe...

I have the Linux drive back on the Mobo so I'm guessing there is something wrong with the MBR at this point. The Win drive at this point is functional and I have salvaged all that I need at this point.

Tried reinstating win10 but getting an error saying a required dvd driver is missing. How can it be if the drive is reading the disc!?? Don't know where to get the driver from or if I can be bothered with all the hassle getting Windows working again .

Something that might be worth a try...

Go to device manager and find the dvd drive. It should have an exclamation mark if it hasn't got a driver. Right click it and select "update driver", then "browse my computer for driver software", then "let me pick from a list..."

It should have a list of standard drivers that are bundled in with windows but it doesn't try for whatever reason. I think it is for older hardware. I have to do it for my wireless xbox controller adaptor

When you install windows, it starts by reading the disk through the BIOS. It then needs to switch to protected mode which would require drivers. At least, that's my memory from 20 odd years ago.

There should be an F key to press before that point to load additional drivers, but you'd need to find them for your specific drive.

Remove the DVD drive. Fling it the bucket. Sorted.

I can't do this as the system is currently running Linux.
