IMHO loud pipes are anti-social and just give more ammunition to anti-biking brigade. Used to work with a guy who rode an Aprilia V twin, he was very proud of the ' for track use only' embossed on his 'silencers' - he worked shifts and left his house at 5am when on morning shift, and when working afternoons he arrived back after 11pm. He could not understand why his neighbours were offhand with him, making a noise in the street at ungodly hours....

We need all the good press we can get, and non standard loud pipes are not helping at all.

On a slightly different tack but also loud exhaust related.Anyone had this?

A a couple of times over that past year I got stuck behind rough looking,"Boy Racer" hatchbacks with stupid loud exhausts.That didn't bother me as much as the fumes that were so bad I had to pull over to stop getting choked!

I invite you to take a look at "rolling coal". A southern USA redneck pastime where they smoke protesters, Prius owners and anything else that upsets them. An affiliated group like to block the Tesla charging points with their large trucks.

Luckily the technology does not yet exist to identify a specific vehicle in amongst others (yet), however I don't see too much money being sunk into it as if the government get their way, everyone will be on an electric vehicle in the next decade or 2 anyway, no legislation will be needed to ensure that, just a hike in the fuel escalator, that will eventually kill off most people's ability to even remotely justify the use of a petrol/diesel engine'd vehicle at all.

Although the downside of an electric bike (or car, or van or god help us HGV's) with just a little motor whine will be the death rate of mobile phone zombies everywhere being mowed down by silent vehicles while stuck in their little messaging world and cocooned in their music blasting noise cancelling headphones.

Purely anecdotal, but in my experience my slightly louder exhaust has alerted pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers to my presence.
It's not that loud and my neighbours still talk to me, the worst offenders seem to be IL4 600s and 125s with straight through systems, which are just whiney or painful as they take so long to get up the road!
