Another possibility - series regulator:

Re: SV650 Curvy - Voltage Regulator / Rectifier supplier?
Hi
I have installed a second hand rectifier which gave the correct readings when on the bike it has been removed from. When lights are off, 16.5 volts at idle and hovers around 17v at 5,000 rpm. When lights are on, 13.5 volts at idle and just below 14 volts at 5,000 rpm. The results with lights on are within range, whereas lights off is outside acceptable range. Switching between dip and main beam does not change the voltage. Any indicators as to what the problem is? Thanks, |

Re: SV650 Curvy - Voltage Regulator / Rectifier supplier?
Hi,
I fully charged the battery and the charging system behaves the same. I fitted the previous rectifier back on the bike, and now it is behaving as previous with poor charge. Before I resort to buying another rectifier, can a rectifier be faulty and cause over charging? Or should I be chasing through the motorbikes electrics? I have also checked the Stator output again and now one of the three connectors is showing a couple of volts less than the other two. Can this be causing the excess charging? Thanks, |

Yes.
Anything 15V upwards will fry the battery.

Re: SV650 Curvy - Voltage Regulator / Rectifier supplier?
You need to be a little careful about testing, though. If the R/R has been detached from the wiring loom before testing, it's possible that you'd read a high voltage when there's zero load. At least, that's my understanding!
