Default Running 120/70 profile front tyres

I was thinking about running a 120/70 tyre up front.

Three quick questions:

i) Does this make much of a difference? I've heard it can help give more grip on trackdays.

ii)By how much should I pull throught he front forks to maintain the correct geometry?

iii) Will my glued on Fenda Extenda interfere with the extra tyre height?

Cheers,

Tim

Hi Tim,

1) Not that much, bigger chicken strips on the road, greater possible lean angle on the track.

2) No need to change the forks. 5mph difference on the speedo.

3) Fender Extender a no-no, not enough room between the tyre and the mudguard. Stay out of gravel on the roads for the same reason.

What do you mostly use the bike for??

On track they are good, on the road they are horrid*!!

*At <20mph you are fighting the front tipping in.

Dropping the front pressure 2-3 psi stops this.

I find them very neutral handling.

I found the same with Bluey....not sure about horrid but I'll go with Bluey. Like most things you can get used to the different feeling and ride around(?) it. All about living with any compromise innit

I'll drop the forks though yokes myself. It's always surprised me when people say "...they didn't notice any difference....". Shape of the tyre plays a part of course but.....

You like your track days and also riding the 'curves' so I reckon, "do it" . You can try it out with forks in original position and go from there. On the 'S' easy to chage position of forks.

Just get a 3mm and 5mm(or indeed any combination) Allen keys for measuring the distance to drop forks through yokes.....makes it all nice and easy and do one side at a time.

Loosen pinceh bolts and the retaining bolt(what ever the correct name is) that stops bar from spinning around
Slide bars down, put Allen key inbetween bar and top yoke, slide bars back up and do up the pinch bolt for the bar.
Remove Allen
Loosen the pinch bolts for the yoke and slide forks through the yokes. Do up the pinch bolts for top an dbottom yokes,
Then the retaining bolt for clipons.
Job done.

I went to a presentation by a tyre manufacture the other day, the argument against this is the tyre is not designed to work properly when forced into that shape. It was also suggested that the insurance companies may use this as a lever to avoid paying out a claim.

But the 70 is the 'height' not the 'width' ... how is it getting 'forced'? It's not like fitting a 180 section rear tyre on a SV rim (ment for 160)

Sorry no longer running an SV so got the width wrong, but if placing to wide a tyre on the rim that was the Michelin mans opinion.
