noisy engine

hello people

i have had my SV for a few months now, and had assumed the noises were normal. Then a friend of mine also got a 03 sv650 of similar mileage, but his engine is much quieter.

the noises are:
- ticking, present throughout the rev range but loudest at 3k and 5k
- whirring noise, when in first gear (high pich at higher speed), disappears in all other gears

also a gentle scrapping sound from around the rear wheel (rear brake rubbing?)

are these anything to worry about? and what are the causes? and possible fixes?

if it helps its a SV650s K3 (FI restrictor kit, K&N, Fuel exhaust are the only engine mods)

possibly one of the cam chain tensioners either dodgy or stuck, rear scraping noise most likely brake pads rubbing. Pop it on a stand and rotate the wheel taking a look see.

When was it last checked for valve clearances?

I ran two SVs before I sold one, a year of age between them. They sounded very different to each other in the engine dept. One was a lot 'tickier' than the other, especially after a very long run and it had gotten very hot after a good workout. Other is very quiet in comparison.
Nowt wrong with either of them.
I'm not saying theres nowt wrong with yours, just be aware that no two bikes sound the same, even if they are the same bike. I have heard it can all be down to how they were run in, what truth there is in that is anyones guess.

will check the brakes later

and i don't know on the valve clearances, it should have been done at the 15,000 mile service? (its done 16,000ish) and how would i check the tensioner?

Only real way to check a tensioner is to remove it and check it by hand, it has a ratchet and spring, they sometimes get stuck or break completely. If it was totally busted I think you would know

One tip for locating noises can be to get yourself a long screwdriver or similar shaped opject. With the engine running you can touch one end on the various engine components within reach, the other end to your ear by gripping it and holding your hand tight to your ear. Works much like a stethescope and can sometimes give you a much clearer idea where the noise is coming from. Obviously you need to take care where you are poking with a screwdriver, don't go listening to your rear sprocket with this method

the ticking might be what has been said above



the whirring in 1st is just the gear, its like when a car is in reverse does the same thing

Agreed about the 1st gear noise, mine does the same! Nothing to worry about

Yep can always tell when i've changed down into first with the noise it makes
