I done mine today for the first time , my bikes done 1500 miles but the chain looked like it had done 15,000. i Used brake cleaner then muc-off, worked really well but i did use a full can of brake cleaner and i dont think its cheap (i get mine free ). Might try the parafin next time

Is he involved in aviation or is he Mercan? I think jet fuel is called kerosene rather than paraffin. Mind you, the stuff I bought in B&Q is labelled as 'parasene'.

No, but he does always call things by names that no one else uses. I think he may just be mad

Yep, paraffin's the stuff (or whatever you choose to call it ). Usually around £3 for 4 lts, so pretty cost effective.

Main thing to be aware of is that it degreases it and dries off pretty effectively, so exposes the chain to moisture and rust. It's important you treat the chain soon after it has dried off.

Scottoiler (or equivalent) is the real answer .

Oh and kerosine and paraffin is different as one is used in aviation has a very low flash point and is difficult to get ( I can), the other is a fuel used for heating and such. They both clean the chain just fine though the kerosine seems to do a little bitter job. The best trick is if you get a chance, is remove the back wheel, or loosen the chain off completley, then leave it soak in some. Maybe over night. This will mean the kerosine gets in the links and loosens all the cack and old oil out. Then once it is all cleaned warm the chain up with a 20 min ride and then lube it. This will help the loob bond more ready for your next ride, leave standing for a while once its loobed.

I wouldnt do any of that.Solvents can be bad for the O rings in chains,so I just put oil on mine. This cleans the crud off and lubricates the chain.Better still get a chain oiler.
