has something broken?
in my gearbox?
Pulled up at the lights near home yesterday and tried to kick down to neutral but nothing happeend, ie the pedal moved but there was no resistance and no "clunk". I couldn't kick past into 1st, no green light nothing. I let the clutch out a bit and eventually got it. Anyway got home and checked the oil which was a midway between the lines so I topped it up. Checked the clutch adjustment under the front sprocket cover and that was all perfect. Seemed fine going to work until just before I arrived and my last stop at a junction it did the same. Again tonight on the way home, sometimes fine, but occassionally refusing to engage. If I let the clutch out a little, it seems to do the trick. My chain is OK but in any event this is occurring when stationary. Any clues or is it a visit to the dealer?

Sometimes I have to let the clutch out while stationary to get a gear... but thats when I'm neutral. Is the neutral light actualy working?

Check the gear lever linkage arm hasn't adjusted itself.
Other than that I am clueless |

I checked the linkage also - thanks. I have just adjusted the chain but it needed so little and I would be doubtful this would affect things whilst stationary. Thx for the advice (both) I'll see what tommorrow brings. If it's still playing up I know of this mobile / advisory / mechanical services group that meet up in Soho each week........! cheers Al.

MMmm. Didn't misbehave this morning at all (well one false neutral which is par for the course) but no "wooley" pedal. I adjusted the chain slack which was just beyond the 1.2" and now it seems fine. Still don't get how this affects stationary gear action! Must admit the bike felt better for the adjustment. Is it me or does a correctly adjusted chain almost seem too tight with just 0.8 - 1.2 ". My last bike was a Kwak 125 Eliminator (bid of a parody that name!) and had quite a bit of slack. BTW Saw two new SVers this morning, Long Lane just before Hillingdon Stn and at Perivale jnc with A40 / Argyll Rd. Anyone from here?
Still feels better now.

Make sure that your clutch is adjusted properly and it sounds very much like the gear lever pivot, (on the footrest), is seizing up, try squirting some WD or similar around it and see if the problem goes away.
The aluminium of the inside of the lever is corroding and squeezing the fibrous bearing/bush, which is in turn gripping the pivot, when this happens, the effort needed to move the lever exceeds the force the spring can provide, thus the selector mechanism won't reset.
