RnD is pretty expensive.

Lets not forget this is a relatively new technology & they couldn't really "borrow" ideas from other countries.

Oh yea, and it'll still be as insecure as hell.

Playtime anyone?

Got the same people that budgeted for the Olympics?

I'm not paying £900 for an ID card.

Well, they have to spend all that money they take off us somehow. Why not spend it on an insecure "security" card scheme that no one wants and that will be far more expensive to administer (as an ongoing cost, once it's up and running) than even this latest 5 billion estimate.

I still fail to understand how the use of an identy card can increase the nations security. I don't think any of the recent terrorist plots or acts have been committed by illegals. and therefore all bombers both actual and alleged would have been granted an id card. so how the hell Mr Reid would a card have stopped these attrocities. Instead the 5+billion could build quite a few hospitals and beef up MI5 to the extent that in future they will investigate all contacts of "targets" and just maybe we might actually stop home grown terrorists before they act.
