Default Dear Tourists...

Lovely to see you in the area. I hope you enjoy your stay.

As you know, we're home to Croy Brae (AKA Electric Brae), one of those inexplicable places where cars roll UP the hill. It would be a shame to miss it while you're here.

However, please bear in mind it's on a nice biking road and, when I come round that blind left-hander, it would be really ****ing helpful if I wasn't confronted by the back of your Saab rolling slowly up the hill towards me. Today's slow-moving chicane caused by one of your compadres doing the same on the other side of the road was a blast though. Thanks for that.

Perhaps the next time you might want to use that very long and very empty layby - you know, the one I pulled into to empty my ****ing trousers.

It's a shame you ****ed off at that point - I was only on my way over to give the traditional Ayrshire greeting - I hope you didn't miss the sign language version.

Thanks for your attention.

Quote:
The slope of gravity hills is an optical illusion, although sites are often accompanied by claims that magnetic or even supernatural forces are at work.

The most important factor contributing to the illusion is a completely or mostly obstructed horizon; without a horizon, judging the slope of a surface is difficult as a reliable reference is missing. Objects one would normally assume to be more-or-less perpendicular to the ground (such as trees) may actually be leaning, offsetting the visual reference.

My dad took us as weans and now I take my own weans! Love to stop and roll 'up' the hill!

Me too. I'm down that road regularly and still stop sometimes when I'm in the car on my own, big kid that I am.

Not right on the bend though, eh? It doesn't even work so well at the top (or rather, bottom) of the hill.
